At 17, Cole Chalupka is one of the youngest members of Drum Corps International. Chalupka, whose story is featured this month on the Hamilton City of Music website, first took up drums in elementary school. His interest was rekindled at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School after joining the school’s drumline. The after-school activity not only put Chalupka on the path to fun and friendship, but helped him develop into a top-notch musician.
Last year, while in Grade 12, drumline instructor Corey Pearce encouraged Chalupka to try out for Drum Corps International. Chalupka began practising with the corps in January.
For Chalupka, now studying Humanities at University of Toronto’s Erindale Campus, it’s an opportunity he couldn’t have imagined four years ago. This fall he is setting his sights higher than ever – he will be auditioning for a world-class drum corps, the Bluecoats.
